Is there a case for resurrecting News of the World?

Five tweets.

I there anyone out there who thinks that closing #NotW was the *right* response to the scandal?

Consensus seems to be that 200 blameless journos sacked for actions of predecessors, right? #NotW

Departure of R.Brooks, full enquiry(s) and grilling of Murdochs by Select Committee much better short term outcomes. #NotW

Power of News Corp undoubtedly much weakened. Much less influence of pols and it cannot bully/threaten with impunity any more. #NotW

Therefore: Is there a case for resurrecting #NotW?! Reinstating staff under new interim management presumably quite easy.

  1. MatGB says:

Definitely a case, yes. I suspect Murdoch’s gameplan is to sell of the papers and put in a new bid for BSkyB in 6 months assuming the dust has settled and he’s not been ruled unfit.

If he were to sell off the papers, he’d sell the rights to the NOTW alongside the Sun at a guess, if I were buying I’d certainly insist on those rights anyway.

  2. Clarice says:

There *is* a case, but only if you seriously believe tweet #4 (which I think may turn out to be premature), *and* if you’re seriously willing to argue for the kind of prurient sleaze, casual misogyny, and gutter ‘journalism’ that NotW represents.
